What is a freight shipping quote?

A freight shipping quote is an estimated shipping cost you may have to pay to the freight carrier to get your freight delivered from point “A” to point “B”. It’s an estimate of the shipping charges based on a variety of factors related to your freight, such as:

  • Freight’s size, dimension, and weight
  • Freight’s type
  • Pickup location
  • Delivery location

When you approach a freight carrier/transportation company/broker for your shipping needs, they’ll provide you with a freight quote by considering the aforementioned factors related to your freight. If you agree to the quote, the freight carrier will sign up to deliver your shipment. After your freight delivery, you’ll pay the amount you agreed to in terms of the freight quote to the freight carrier.

In the most straightforward way, a freight quote is the shipping cost or rate agreed upon between the shipper (you) and a carrier or broker to deliver your freight.

Modern freight transportation companies offer online freight shipping quotes to customers. To get a freight quote from your transportation partner, you just need to visit its official website and enter the details of your freight. The website will automatically generate a quote.

You can get freight quotes for all types of freight and equipment, such as:

  • FTL Shipping (Full Truckload)
  • LTL Shipping (Less-Than-Truckload)

FTL shipping covers the transportation of goods that occupy the whole space in a truck. On the other hand, LTL shipping covers the transportation of goods that occupy only a portion of the entire truck space. You can get freight quotes for all FTL modes, including dry van, refrigerated, and flatbed.

How is a freight quote calculated?

As we mentioned earlier, a freight quote gives you an estimated cost you need to pay to the freight carrier for the transportation of your goods.

Modern freight transportation and brokerage companies have integrated online freight quote calculators with their websites. When a shipper enters the detail of their freight in the websites, the online calculator processes the details by using computer algorithms and gives the shipper an instant freight quote.

Online freight quoting is a modern technology. Many shippers and freight carriers still rely on traditional freight quoting, in which a shipper calls or emails a carrier with shipping requirements and asks for a quote. The carrier responds with a freight quote after a few hours or days. Online freight quoting is way much more efficient, instant, and resource-saving than traditional quoting.

In Fr8App your freight shipping quote is calculated based on the details you provide about your shipment so we recommend fill in the application form providing as much information as possible.

What is a Freight quote provider?

You can get a freight quote from a freight broker 3PL or a transportation company. In both cases, you should ensure you’re getting an affordable quote that meets your shipping and budget needs.

Most freight brokers, 3PLs like Fr8App and carriers provide free shipping quotes. If you have basic knowledge about how freight shipping works, you can go get quotes directly from freight carriers and compare them to choose the best one.

However, if you’re a beginner, a professional freight broker can help you choose the quote as per your shipping requirements. Freight brokers work on behalf of both the freight carrier and shipper. That’s why they’re more experienced in figuring out a quote agreeable to both stakeholders.

Domestic freight vs. cross-border freight quote

Your freight quote can be higher or lower depending on where you’re shipping to.

You can expect lower quotes from your freight service provider if you’re shipping domestically, such as inter or intra-state shipping.

However, if you’re shipping cross-border, like shipping freight from Mexico to US or ship freight from US to Mexico, you need to get a cross-border freight shipping quote which is way much more expensive than a domestic quote.

FTL shipping quote VS LTL shipping quote

The type of shipment (FTL or LTL) you’re delivering plays a crucial role in the calculation of your freight quote.

LTL shipping and FTL shipping have different shipping costs. LTL shipping is suitable for freight that doesn’t fill the entire space in a truck or container. So, you will be required to pay for only the truck space covered by your LTL shipments. Therefore, LTL shipping quotes are lower.

On the other hand, FTL shipping is suitable for the freight that covers the entire truck space, so you need to pay for the whole of the truck space. Therefore, FTL freight quotes are higher.

Hoy Weight and Size of Your Freight affect the Freigth Quotes

The heavier your shipment is, the higher your freight quote will be. If the goods you want to ship are on a pallet or bagged in a container (whether it’s LTL shipping or FTL shipping), you can easily determine their weight.

You just need to weigh all items individually and then add all the weights to get the whole shipment’s weight. While calculating the shipment weight, don’t forget to add the weight of the pallet to the total weight. A typical pallet weighs around 40 lbs. If your freight is in more than one pieces, simply weigh each piece individually and add up all weight to calculate the shipment’s weight.

The next step is determining the size of the shipment. If you have a single-piece shipment enclosed in a crate, simply measure the length, width, and height of the crate. It will give you the size of your shipment. However, if your shipment is a multi-piece, you need to measure each piece’s dimensions individually and add all the dimensions together to get your shipment’s size.

Once you have determined the size and weight of your shipment, it will be easy for you to figure out what shipping mode you require – LTL shipping or FTL shipping.

Freight Quotes for Shipments that need special care and handling

The heavier your shipment is, the higher your freight quote will be. If the goods you want to ship are on a pallet or bagged in a container (whether it’s LTL shipping or FTL shipping), you can easily determine their weight.

You just need to weigh all items individually and then add all the weights to get the whole shipment’s weight. While calculating the shipment weight, don’t forget to add the weight of the pallet to the total weight. A typical pallet weighs around 40 lbs. If your freight is in more than one pieces, simply weigh each piece individually and add up all weight to calculate the shipment’s weight.

How Locations of pickup and delivery destination affect Freight Quotes

While getting a freight quote from a carrier or broker in Fr8App, the first detail you’re required to add is the locations of the origin and destination of your freight.

You must enter the delivery and origin zip codes of your shipment to get your freight quote. Most freight carriers don’t require the full address of pickup and delivery location unless the customer is ready to book the shipment. However, you may be asked to enter the type of location, like residential or business.

It’s essential to keep in mind that the longer the distance between your pickup and delivery destination, the higher the freight quote you’ll get. For example, there’s a large distance between origin and destination when you want to ship freight from Mexico to US or US to Mexico.

How the Value of the Freight affects Freight Quotes

Your freight’s value can affect your freight quote if you choose to get additional insurance coverage that is not included in the carrier’s liability insurance.

Shippers usually get supplemental insurance to cover their valuable freight against financial losses and theft incidents during transit. Your freight carrier may ask you to purchase special additional insurance if your freight is worth $15000 or more.

Some well-reputed international freight carriers have higher liability insurance which can cover your valuable freight even if it is higher than $15000. So whether or not the value of your freight affects your freight quote depends on the limits of your freight carrier’s liability insurance.

Normal delivery vs. expedited Freight Shipping Quote

How fast you need your freight to be delivered affects your shipping cost and, eventually, your freight quote. Most freight carriers offer two types of deliveries depending on the time that the shipment spends in transit – Normal delivery and Expedited delivery.

As the name implies, expedited delivery ensures faster freight delivery. It’s the best option for time-sensitive freight. On the other hand, normal delivery requires more time to deliver the shipment. While getting your freight quote, you’re required to select one option between normal and expedited delivery.

Some modern freight carriers option three delivery packages, including:

  • Standard Freight Delivery
  • Expedited/Express Freight Delivery
  • Guaranteed Freight Delivery

Guaranteed freight delivery is the most expensive delivery package as it allows you to decide on the delivery date. Standard freight delivery is inexpensive than expedited delivery.
